On one hand, it will incorporate topics and discussions where the concepts of "openness" and "security" can go hand in hand, not in opposition directions. On the other, it will focus on the notions of "technology" and "governance", two inseparable aspects in the construction and development of the Internet.
    4th. Regional CSIRT Meeting

    The meeting is aimed at improving knowledge among stakeholders in the region and promote the exchange of experiences that help strengthen the region in terms of preventing and mitigating the impact of information security incidents.
    The target audience is that of regional CSIRTs in operation and those organizations that are currently considering the creation of a group response to computer security incidents.

    Fifth Regional Preparatory Meeting for the Internet Governance Forum to be held in Bogota in September

    As in previous editions, the purpose of the meeting is to provide a space for multistakeholder political dialogue where governments, the private sector, the technical community, academia, and civil society organizations can share and discuss their points of view. The region has made progress in understanding the challenges currently posed by Internet governance; further debate will contribute to identify regional priorities and broaden the region’s participation at the 2012 Internet Governance Forum (IGF), which will meet in Baku, Azerbaijan in the month of November.

    LACNIC in the Caribbean 4

    The Latin American and Caribbean Internet Addresses Registry (LACNIC) is pleased to invite you to take part in the LACNIC-CARIBBEAN 4 meeting from July 18th to 20th 2012 at the Karibe Hotel, Port-au-Prince, Haiti. This event will be hosted by AHTIC – Haitian Association for the ICTs. LACNIC meetings provide opportunities to discuss recently completed activities, initiatives and proposals with members and sector representatives, to construct and articulate collaborative efforts for Internet development and stability in Latin America and the Caribbean. In addition to presenting the work that LACNIC has being doing in the region during the last 10 years, this meeting is intended as a space to think about the ways to facilitate IPv6 deployment in the Caribbean as well as technical solutions to face crisis situations like the one experienced in Haiti in 2010. This meeting will comprise a one day IPv6 workshop with parallel sessions for the technical and non-technical participants. In the following days, it will be the occasion for LACNIC to make a presentation of its institution and activities such as the development of policies for the assignment of internet resources, the RPKI (Resource Certification and Routing Security), initiatives to strengthen the region, participation mechanisms, and discussion forums, among others. Within the meeting, an exhibition will offer various companies the possibility to showcase their technology solutions for the deployment of IPv6 and tell their experiences in the management of the humanitarian crisis faced by the country in 2010.

    The LACNIC XVII meeting will be held in the city of Quito, Ecuador from 6 to 11 May, 2012 at the Swissôtel Quito with the support of SUPERTEL, Ecuador's Telecommunications Superintendent, and CORPECE, the Ecuatorean e-Commerce Corporation.
    The name of the event will be The New Internet Generation: Opportunities and Challenges for Latin America and the Caribbean and its main goal will be to promote Internet development and stability, helping the more than 600 million inhabitants of our region join the Information Society.
    The week-long program includes various activities ranging from technical training workshops on new technologies, security, and the promotion of IPv6 adoption, to open technical forums such as the Public Policy Forum and the Security, Interconnection and FLIP 6 Forums. The program also includes the LACNIC Annual Member Assembly, the Government Working Group meeting, and the Annual Assembly and workshops organized by the region's ccTLD association, LACTLD.
    We anticipate that the Quito meeting will contribute to the discussion of the issues that are essencial for Internet operation within the region.

    This meeting will provide those responsible for strategic technological and operational decisions at major Latin American and Caribbean Internet service providers, content providers, and technology companies a platform where they will be able to obtain information and exchange ideas and experiences in a scenario in which new technologies exist that offer new opportunities and may even change current Internet business models.

    IPv6 HandsOn - Tuneles y servidores web en IPv6

    The following content is in the language in which the webinar will be presented. The following one will only be presented in Spanish.
    En el camino hacia LACNIC XVII y hacia el "World IPv6 Launch Day" mostraremos como partiendo de un servidor Linux recién instalado podemos configurar conectividad IPv6 (via túneles), registros DNS y un servidor web, de tal manera que al finalizar este seminario virtual de 1h 15m de duracion, habremos publicado contenido en IPv6.

    Cubriremos los siguientes puntos:
    • Crear y configurar un tunel con Hurricane Electric
    • Configurar el servidor Linux para que se conecte a Internet en IPv6
    • Configuraremos el servidor Apache para que responda en IPv6 y sirva contenido
    • Configuraremos registros DNS para que la página web responda en solo-IPv4, solo-IPv6 y en dual-stack

    Como resultado final los participantes habrán publicado contenido web en IPv6 y como entregable final para los participantes haremos disponibles los archivos de configuración tanto del servidor web como los comandos para fácilmente configurar el túnel y los registros de DNS.

    RPKI (3-4) In LACNIC

    Continuing with the cycle of virtual seminars on the Internet resource certification system (RPKI), we will now introduce a new activity where LACNIC's Engineering team will be at your full disposal for 30-minute periods. During this time the team will help you:
    • Create your certificates
    • Create ROAs (Routing Origin Authorization)
    • Identify roles and users
    • Recover access keys
    • Answer any RPKI-related questions or doubts.
    The main goal of this activity is that at the end of their 30 minutes each participating organization will have certified their resources and generated ROAs. In order to participate you must register and select at least two 30-minute time slots to notify us of your availability to participate in this activity. On 14/10/2011 you will receive an invitation containing the URL to which you must connect, and the date and time assigned for your meeting with the Engineering team.

    RPKI (2-4) Operation

    Luego de haber tenido un primer encuentro teórico en el que se explicaron detalles técnicos relacionados con la plataforma de certificación de recursos de Internet, nos llega este segundo seminario virtual en el cual veremos en funcionamiento la implementación de RPKI realizada por LACNIC, conoceremos cómo se publica el material generado, de qué forma se valida la información y cómo algunas de las nuevas implementaciones de BGP de enrutadores pueden alimentarse de los repositorios generados para aplicar validación de origen (origin validation).
    Para esta demostración utilizaremos una versión de pruebas la cual replica el total de funcionalidades disponibles en un sistema de producción de RPKI y validación de origen que podría implementar cualquier ISP en el futuro.

    Durante los días 30 y 31 de agosto, como parte del Zonamerica TechDay II, LACNIC y el Proyecto 6Deploy con el apoyo de Zonamerica, presentó una nueva edición del "Taller de IPv6 para operadores de red".

    El taller se mostraron conceptos generales del nuevo protocolo de Internet asi como tópicos avanzados en mecanismos de transición (túneles y NAT64/DNS64) y enrutamiento (OSPFv3, IS-IS y M-BGP), incluyendo actividades hands-on.

    RPKI (1-4) Introduction

    This one hour and a half virtual seminar is one of four seminars that LACNIC staff will conduct in order to deepen the community’s understanding regarding certification of resources (RPKI). LACNIC’s Research and Development team will describe the problem of resource hijacking, it will also show known cases of attacks of this nature, then it will present in detail the architecture of RPKI and the manner of how this certificate solve the problem of hijacking. Finally, there will be a summary with links, presentations and documentation about RPKI. The seminars will be conducted in Spanish.

    This meeting will comprise a one and a half day IPv6 workshop. The following topics will be discussed: basic IPv6, Routing Pv6, Transition Mechanisms, IPv6 Security, and Resource Certification (RPKI) in practice. It will also be the occasion for LACNIC to make a presentation of its institution and activities such as the development of policies for the assignment of internet resources, the IPv4 and IPv6 resources allocation, initiatives to strengthen the region, participation mechanisms, discussion forums, etc. This two days and a half meeting is free and open to all the Internet community. All activities will be in English.

    Staff de LACNIC, Sofia Silva analistas de recursos en compañía Carlos Matínez Ingeniero de investigación y desarrollo compartieron con los asistentes al seminario una charla sobre direccionamiento en IPv6. Notación, formatos, tamaño, tipos y direcciones especiales en IPv6 fueron algunos de los temas desarrollados. Tambien se dieron recomendaciones de como solicitar direcciones y hacer planes de direccionamiento en este nuevo protocolo.

    Hosted by NIC.mx,the LACNIC XV event was held on 15-20 May 2011 in Cancun, Mexico. There were 297 participants from 32 different countries, both from the LACNIC region as well as from other regions.

    Participants included representatives from different sectors such as governments, academia, ISPs, NAP and ccTLD operators, content providers, international carriers, Regional Internet Registries, ICANN, and civil society.

    Simultaneous interpretation in three languages (Spanish, English and Portuguese) was provided for all plenary sessions, which were also broadcast via webcast. Remote participation was significant.

    En este seminario el especialista en seguridad de protocolos de comunicaciones Fernando Gont describió algunos de los mecanismos de seguridad introducidos en IPv6, las vulnerabilidades de IPv6 y posibles soluciones para éstas. Gont es miembro del Centro de Estudios de Informatica (CEDI) de la Universidad Tecnológica Nacional/Facultad Regional Haedo (UTN/FRH) de Argentina, focalizando su trabajo en el área de ingeniería de Internet, teniendo participación activa en varios "Working Groups" de la Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).

    Los días 6, 7 y 8 de abril de 2011 se realizó de forma gratuita el taller “IPv6 para operadores” en este se trataron temas prácticos y teóricos relacionados con: asignación de direcciones IPv6 a operadores, direccionamiento, mecanismos de transición, protocolos de enrutamiento, configuración de servicios en IPv6 (DNS, e-mail, www) y seguridad Ipv6.

    Como fue anunciado oportunamente el pasado 3 de febrero se agotó definitivamente el stock central de direcciones IPv4 administrado por la IANA, hecho que ha desencadenado el irreversible proceso de cambio de protocolo de Internet. En este seminario se describieron diversos mecanismos para la transición a Ipv6, 'pila doble' (Dual Stack), 'pila doble ligera' (Dual Stack lite), NAT64, 6to4, túneles, fueron algunas de las alternativas de transición presentadas en este seminario.
